Ann R. Purcell, Chair of the Georgia State Transportation Board (STB), has been named one of Engineering Georgia magazine’s “100 Influential Women in Georgia Engineering.” The annual list highlights women leaders who have made significant contributions to the engineering industry in the state.

Purcell represents Congressional District 1 in southeast Georgia, covering several counties including Appling, Bacon, Brantley, Bryan, Camden, Charlton, Chatham, parts of Effingham, Glynn, Liberty, Long, McIntosh, Pierce, Ware and Wayne. She was elected to the STB in 2013 and has previously served as vice chair and secretary. Her background includes 18 years in the Georgia House of Representatives where she chaired the Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee and participated on various other committees. Purcell is recognized for her advocacy for her district and is a graduate of Georgia Southern College.

“For the eighth consecutive year, Engineering Georgia magazine has included the members of the STB and Georgia DOT in this annual listing recognizing the contributions and influence of the most notable women in Georgia engineering,” according to the release. This year’s list features five STB members along with five team members from Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT).

The State Transportation Board consists of 14 members representing each congressional district in Georgia. Members are chosen by a majority vote from their respective districts’ General Assembly caucus and serve staggered five-year terms. The board oversees planning, development and management of transportation projects throughout the state.

Georgia DOT employs nearly 4,000 people who plan, construct and maintain state and federal highways as well as work on bridge projects, waterways, public transit systems, railroads, aviation programs and support local governments with road maintenance. The department emphasizes innovation, safety and sustainability while aiming to enhance mobility across Georgia.

“Georgia DOT aims to deliver a transportation system focused on innovation, safety, sustainability and mobility. The department takes pride in its diverse and well-trained workforce and is proud to recognize the achievements of these women,” according to a statement from GDOT.

Engineering Georgia magazine’s May/June issue features its latest list of influential women.
