Archbold introduces new generation of robotic surgery with da Vinci 5

Archbold Hospitals has introduced the da Vinci 5 robotic surgery system, a development that aims to improve surgical procedures and patient outcomes. The new system is described as the most advanced and fully integrated version of the da Vinci line, following ten years of research.

The da Vinci robotic surgery system offers a minimally invasive alternative to traditional open surgery. Surgeons use small incisions and specialized instruments controlled by computer technology, which can reduce recovery times and minimize complications.

According to Archbold, the da Vinci 5 model features over 150 design improvements and increased computing power. These updates are intended to enhance surgical precision, provide greater autonomy for surgeons, streamline operating room processes, and introduce advanced data analytics.

“With da Vinci, patients benefit from faster healing and recovery, fewer complications, less discomfort, minimal scarring and shorter hospital stays,” said Katie Hanisee, MD, FACS, FASMBS, General and Bariatric Surgeon at Archbold. “Da Vinci 5 delivers dramatic technology innovations and builds on the system’s proven results at Archbold and facilities around the world.”

A key feature of the new system is Force Feedback technology. This advancement allows surgeons to sense three-dimensional forces during procedures through their hand controllers. “The cutting-edge Force Feedback technology allows for less tissue trauma for patients,” Hanisee added.

The updated system also provides improved visualization with more accurate colors, higher resolution images, and enhanced image fusion for realistic 3D views. As with previous versions of the da Vinci robot at Archbold Hospitals, all movements are directed by surgeons in real time; the robot does not operate independently.

The robotic arms mimic human hand movements but can also rotate beyond normal range—up to 360 degrees—which expands surgical capabilities.

Since adopting its first da Vinci machine in 2011, Archbold Hospitals has used robotic-assisted techniques in various surgeries including cancer treatment, gastrointestinal operations, bariatric procedures, gynecological surgeries, thoracic (chest) interventions, and urological cases.
