Archbold Pulmonology has marked a milestone by completing its 500th robotic-assisted lung biopsy using the Intuitive Ion robotic bronchoscopy system. The procedure was performed on February 11, 2026, by pulmonologists Ronald S. Batin, MD; Christian J. Trujillo, MD; and Luis Wulff, MD.

The Intuitive Ion system is designed to help pulmonologists reach difficult-to-access lung nodules with high precision. This technology features an ultra-thin catheter that allows providers to navigate deep into the lungs with stability, which can improve diagnostic accuracy compared to traditional methods.

Dr. Batin said, “The Ion system has been transformational for our practice and for this community. It allows us to access all 18 segments of the lungs to obtain tissue safely and accurately. When lung nodules are found to be cancerous, performing biopsy locally with the Ion system at Archbold often allows treatment to begin earlier and with greater confidence.”

Lung nodules can be caused by cancer or other conditions such as infection or autoimmune disease. Accurate biopsies are essential for determining the cause and guiding treatment.

Dr. Trujillo commented on the achievement: “Reaching this milestone reflects our commitment to bringing advanced pulmonary care to our region. For many patients, the uncertainty surrounding a lung nodule can be deeply stressful. Being able to provide timely answers and a clear path forward is one of the most meaningful aspects of what we do.”

Archbold Pulmonology’s approach includes support beyond diagnosis through patient coordination led by Lung Navigator Montana Harstad, RN.

“Completing our 500th robotic biopsy is a proud moment for our team,” Dr. Wulff stated. “It represents not just a number, but hundreds of patients who were able to receive advanced diagnostic care close to home. We remain committed to providing this region with leading-edge technology and the highest standard of pulmonary care.”
