The Athens-Clarke County Public Utilities Department announced on May 27 the release of its Drinking Water Quality Report, also known as the Consumer Confidence Report, for 2025. The report details water sources, treatment processes, and results from regular monitoring and testing conducted throughout the year to ensure compliance with state and federal standards.
In 2025, more than 5 billion gallons of water were delivered across Athens-Clarke County. The department’s certified operators and lab technicians performed over 9,500 laboratory tests and approximately 95,000 tests during treatment to meet requirements set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Georgia Environmental Protection Division. The report provides a comprehensive overview of substances found in local drinking water; any substance not listed was not detected during testing.
The department highlighted the efforts of its staff in maintaining continuous operations. “The employees of the Public Utilities Department work, day in and day out, to ensure that our homes, schools, and businesses continue to receive safe, reliable, and high-quality water services,” said Hugh Ogle, Assistant Director of the Public Utilities Department.
In addition to these efforts, the J.G. Beacham Drinking Water Treatment Plant received the Georgia Association of Water Professionals Gold Award for achieving full compliance with all relevant regulations. To increase accessibility to information about drinking water quality in Athens-Clarke County—a consolidated city-county government providing unified public services including management of parks and community programs—customers will receive a summary by mail while full reports are available online or at local offices, according to the official website.
