Atlanta Public Schools recognized National School Nurse Day on May 6, highlighting the contributions of school nurses to student health and well-being. The celebration follows the signing of the 2026 School Nurse Proclamation by Georgia’s governor, which honors school nurses across the state.

National School Nurses Day is observed to honor healthcare professionals who support students’ health, safety, and readiness to learn. According to Dr. Valencia Hildreth, APS Health Services Director, “APS school nurses are creators of ‘warm, open, and caring’ spaces where students feel seen, supported, and free to be themselves.” Hildreth also said she is proud to represent Atlanta Public Schools and its school nurses: “We are called to serve with dedication, compassion, and unwavering commitment.”

Several APS school nurses shared their experiences in serving students. Roshel Kersey said: “I love being an APS school nurse because I have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference every day by supporting both students and staff. Educating students and being an active advocate for their health and well-being is truly fulfilling and reminds me why this work matters so much.” Ashleigh Pyant described her involvement at Jackson Elementary: “My school…is very active in different engagement activities for the students…I enjoy getting out of the clinic and engaging with the students in reading and doing healthcare workshops that I created throughout the year.”

Other nurses reflected on their roles as caregivers within their communities. Cozette Brown said: “I love being an APS school nurse because I have the privilege of caring for the children in our school community each day…Building trust with my students and their families is what makes this work so meaningful to me.” Jewell Kelly added: “I love sharing my knowledge!” Nadia Lewis commented on teaching healthy habits through cheer coaching alongside nursing duties.

Veteran nurse Lori Oxman remarked: “The most rewarding part of school nursing for me is relationship building with students, parents, school staff and the amazing nurses I get to work with each day! Thank you to all the APS nurses for your dedication and collaboration!” Christina Spurlock stated: “The nurse is the healer of all kids! Hugs, band-aids, stickers, and snacks are all they want! I’m the nurse with the most!” Wanda Taylor said she enjoys helping children when needed.

As schools continue recognizing National School Nurse Day annually in May through statewide proclamations or local acknowledgments such as these statements from Atlanta Public Schools staff members—community awareness about student wellness may grow further.
