Atlanta United 2 lost 2-1 to Philadelphia Union II on May 23 at Kinetic Field in Chester. Arif Kovac scored his sixth goal in two matches for Atlanta, but the team was unable to secure a win and will return home after a two-week break on June 6.
The match began with Atlanta taking advantage of an early error by Philadelphia. Kovac chased a long pass from Mohamed Cisset and pressured goalkeeper George Marks, who failed to collect the ball, allowing Kovac to score into an empty net. This gave Atlanta an early lead.
In the first half, Jonathan Ransom made a key save for Atlanta when he stopped attempts from Edward Davis and Nehan Hasan of Philadelphia. Atlanta controlled possession for much of the first half and maintained its lead going into halftime.
Philadelphia equalized three minutes into the second half when Willyam Ferreira delivered a free kick that led to Matheus De Paula scoring after following up his own rebound. In the 83rd minute, Ferreira set up Jordan Griffin, who assisted Theo Reed for Philadelphia’s second goal, putting them ahead late in the game.
Atlanta nearly tied the match in stoppage time when Moises Tablante’s corner found Daniel Chica’s head, but Rafael Uzcategui cleared it off the line for Philadelphia. The result left Atlanta United 2 with six wins, four losses, and one draw this season as they prepare to face Chicago Fire II at Turner Soccer Complex on June 6.
Atlanta United FC operates out of Atlanta, Georgia as part of Major League Soccer’s Eastern Conference and has achieved several honors including winning MLS Cup in 2018 as well as other trophies in subsequent years, according to the official website.
