Atlanta United lost to LA Galaxy 2-1 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on May 10, following a second half with quick goals from both sides.
The match drew attention as both teams struggled for control and neither scored until nearly the 70th minute. Atlanta United competes in Major League Soccer’s Eastern Conference and is based in Atlanta, Georgia, according to the official website.
For much of the game, possession was contested. Early attacks by Saba Lobjanidze and Emmanuel Latte Lath created chances for Atlanta, but defenses held strong. The first half saw physical play with three yellow cards issued to Atlanta within five minutes. Juan Berrocal appeared to score just before halftime, but his goal was disallowed due to a foul during the set piece.
Jay Fortune broke the deadlock in the 69th minute with a long-range shot into the bottom corner—his first goal of the season for Atlanta United. However, LA Galaxy quickly responded as Gabriel Pec scored twice within six minutes. The first came on a breakaway in the 74th minute; his second followed soon after when he capitalized on a rebound off Tomás Jacob and Lucas Hoyos’s save.
Tristan Muyumba stood out in midfield for Atlanta United with high passing accuracy and several tackles and interceptions. Fortune’s substitute appearance resulted in an immediate impact with his goal. In this match, Atlanta limited LA Galaxy to only one shot in the first half—the fewest they have allowed this regular season.
Looking ahead, Atlanta United will face Orlando City SC away on May 16 before meeting them again in the quarterfinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on May 19.
