Atlanta United Unified played to a 3-3 draw against LA Galaxy Unified in their season opener on May 10. The match, held after the Atlanta United first team game, saw both teams score multiple goals and maintain an energetic atmosphere throughout the evening.
The event drew strong support from fans, with chants continuing even after the main match concluded. Atlanta United fell behind early but responded with three goals from Xavier “X-Man” Hairston, including a second-half hat trick. The home side pressed forward with contributions from Alex Evans and Andrew Bartlett, while Ike Eiswirth won a penalty that Hairston converted for his second goal.
Hairston’s third goal came after Austin Griner assisted him in front of goal. Despite leading late into the match, Atlanta conceded two more goals to LA Galaxy Unified, including an equalizer in the final minute of play. Goalkeeper Dee Harden made several important saves as both teams showcased attacking play during the two 30-minute halves.
Every active player had playing time during what was described as an end-to-end contest between inclusive squads comprised of Special Olympics athletes and partners without developmental disabilities. Both teams are allowed free substitutions so all players can participate over the course of each game.
Unified teams train and travel together much like their professional counterparts, creating opportunities for inclusion among athletes across different backgrounds. Atlanta United FC operates out of Atlanta, Georgia and participates as a Major League Soccer team in the Eastern Conference; it has achieved notable successes such as winning the MLS Cup in 2018 and other trophies in subsequent years, according to the official website.
Looking ahead, both clubs will continue their campaigns this season with similar inclusive matches planned.
