The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has awarded a $24.4 million contract to E.R. Snell Contractor, Inc. for the replacement and widening of the Bells Ferry Road bridge over Little River in Cherokee County. Construction is expected to start later this summer with a completion target set for September 2027.
The new bridge will be constructed alongside the existing one, allowing traffic to continue using the current structure until the new bridge is ready. Once operational, traffic will be redirected to the new bridge, and the old one will be dismantled. No detours are anticipated during this process.
This project is part of ongoing infrastructure developments in Cherokee County. Crews are also working on widening State Route 20 from I-575 into Forsyth County, with some sections already open to traffic. Additionally, construction has begun on another segment of Bells Ferry Road from Victoria Drive to just south of Port Victoria Way, scheduled for completion by late 2028.
Motorists traveling through these work zones should expect delays and are advised to exercise caution and reduce speed. Real-time updates on work status and traffic conditions can be accessed by calling 511 or visiting 511ga.org.
“Our maintenance team members who repair roads and bridges and our project teams who oversee construction projects are continuing their essential work,” said GDOT officials, noting that sanitary practices prescribed by health agencies are being followed due to COVID-19 concerns.
