Calhoun Elementary School announced on May 7 that Zach Mendence has been named the 2026-2027 Teacher of the Year, while Tarah Gallman was selected as Staff Member of the Year.
These recognitions highlight educators who have made significant contributions to student learning and school culture. The awards underscore the school’s commitment to fostering a supportive environment for both students and staff.
Mendence is in his 22nd year in education and his second year at Calhoun Elementary, where he teaches fourth-grade math, science, and social studies. He also coaches the Calhoun Middle School Boys Junior Varsity Basketball team. Mendence holds a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from Maryville College and a master’s degree in elementary curriculum from Walden University. He is certified in elementary education as well as middle grades mathematics, science, and social studies. Colleagues describe him as “a passionate, student-focused educator who goes above and beyond to make learning engaging, meaningful, and memorable.” They say he is known for building strong relationships with students while maintaining high expectations.
Gallman is currently in her fourth year in education and her second year at Calhoun Elementary School. She supports fifth-grade English Language Arts classes as well as sixth-grade social studies classes. Gallman is working toward earning her special education degree from Western Governors University. Her colleagues say she is “a caring, hardworking, and dependable team member who consistently goes above and beyond for students and staff.” They add that she creates “a supportive learning environment” with a positive attitude.
According to the official website, Calhoun City School District provides public education from early childhood through high school in Calhoun, Georgia. It operates five schools serving about 4,200 students across three campuses with comprehensive academic programs including arts and athletics.
The announcement reflects ongoing efforts by Calhoun City School District to recognize outstanding faculty members who contribute positively to student achievement through dedication both inside the classroom and within extracurricular activities.
