Pablo Tabares-Martinez, a 50-year-old member of the La Nueva Familia Michoacana drug cartel, has been sentenced to ten years in federal prison. Tabares-Martinez was arrested in Guatemala and extradited to the United States, where he was convicted for conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine.
“The successful extradition and prosecution of Tabares-Martinez reflect my office’s commitment to eliminating dangerous cartels that seek to introduce drugs into our community,” stated U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg. He added, “This case also sends a strong message to cartel members who transport deadly drugs destined for the Northern District of Georgia: we will find you and bring you here to face justice.”
Jae W. Chung, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the DEA Atlanta Division, remarked on the investigation’s significance: “This investigation demonstrates DEA’s commitment to protecting our communities.” Chung emphasized that the DEA is focused on removing dangerous drugs from communities and bringing criminals to justice.
Steven N. Schrank, Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations in Georgia and Alabama, commented on their efforts against cartels: “We will relentlessly pursue and dismantle cartels and criminal organizations that threaten our communities with deadly drugs.” Schrank highlighted that Tabares-Martinez’s extradition and conviction are results of HSI’s dedication alongside law enforcement partners.
The charges presented by U.S. Attorney Hertzberg revealed details about La Nueva Familia Michoacana (LNFM) cartel’s activities, including their role in transporting large quantities of methamphetamine, opioids, heroin, fentanyl, and cocaine into the United States annually.
In November 2021, Tabares-Martinez orchestrated a methamphetamine sale in Atlanta while residing in Mexico as a mid-level LNFM member. In 2022-2023, he helped establish a cocaine transportation route from Colombia to Atlanta before being arrested in March 2023 during a trip to Guatemala for inspecting cocaine shipments.
Tabares-Martinez was extradited back to Georgia in November 2023 and remained under federal custody until his sentencing by Chief United States District Judge Leigh Martin May earlier today. He received ten years imprisonment followed by five years supervised release after pleading guilty on January 13th this year.
The case was investigated jointly by Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) along with Department Homeland Security (DHS), receiving assistance from Guatemalan law enforcement during arrest proceedings against him.
