Weather permitting, the Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) will initiate a 20-day closure of the Chatham Parkway bridge at Interstate 16, starting at 9 p.m. on Friday, June 20. This closure is to allow contractors to elevate the existing bridge over I-16 for supporting reconstructed interstate lanes below.

Throughout this period, all ramps on and off I-16 will remain open, with specific exceptions noted in provided detour maps. Traffic during this closure will face several restrictions: eastbound off-ramp traffic can only turn south onto Chatham Parkway; northbound Chatham Parkway traffic approaching I-16 can only turn right onto I-16 eastbound; westbound off-ramp traffic can only turn north onto Chatham Parkway; and southbound Chatham Parkway traffic approaching I-16 can only turn right onto I-16 westbound.

For four nights during this project, closures and detours are planned as follows:

– From 9 p.m., Friday, June 20 to 9 a.m., Saturday, June 21
– From 10 p.m., Saturday, June 21 to 5 a.m., Sunday, June 22
– From 10 p.m., Sunday, June 22 to 5 a.m., Monday, June 23
– From 9 p.m., Monday, June 23 to 3 a.m., Tuesday, June 24

During these times both directions of I-16 will be closed at Chatham Parkway with specified detours outlined in map references.

Motorists are advised that not all navigation applications may reflect these detours promptly. It is recommended to follow posted detour signage and speed limits. Following the completion of this work, the bridge will feature four travel lanes—two in each direction—with continued lane closures expected primarily at night as work progresses over several weeks.

The exact schedule may change due to weather conditions. Additional intermittent traffic pacing and lane or ramp closures might occur within the work zone beyond what is announced here. Motorists should anticipate delays and exercise caution while traveling through these areas by reducing speed and remaining alert for workers.

For real-time updates on work status and traffic conditions before traveling, motorists are encouraged to call “511”, visit “511ga.org”, or use the Georgia “511” app.

The Georgia Department of Transportation emphasizes its commitment to maintaining state and federal highways across Georgia while promoting innovation, safety, sustainability, and mobility in its transportation system planning. The department’s nearly “4,000 employees” focus on enhancing Georgia’s competitiveness through effective leadership in transportation projects.
