Contractors for the Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) are set to remove the barrier wall on the Chatham Parkway Interchange Bridge over I-16 tonight. This action will open the second northbound travel lane toward US 80 in Chatham County. The completion of phase one of the bridge project marks a significant milestone, addressing repairs on the east side of the bridge caused by last summer’s bridge strike incident.
Phase two is scheduled to commence next week, focusing on repairs on the west side. This phase involves replacing a damaged bridge beam, pouring a new deck, and repairing the barrier wall. During this period, traffic flow will be maintained with two northbound lanes and one southbound lane. The completion of these repairs is expected in June.
The final phase involves bridge jacking to align with the new interstate widening grade below and slab replacements. Scheduled for June, this phase will require an extended detour period. Georgia DOT expects all lanes to be open above I-16 by July 2025.
