CommonSpirit Health announced on May 14 that its hospitals have exceeded the national average in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) 2026 Hospital Star Ratings for the sixth consecutive year.
The ratings are significant because they help patients and families make informed healthcare decisions based on standardized quality measures. In 2026, 56% of CommonSpirit hospitals earned a 4 or 5-star rating, compared to the national average of 42%. This marks an increase from last year’s figure, where only 43% of CommonSpirit hospitals achieved these top ratings while the national average was at 37%.
“Achieving and maintaining excellence in safe, high-quality care is the highest priority at CommonSpirit,” said Dr. Thomas McGinn, SEVP and chief physician executive officer at CommonSpirit. “We are immensely proud of and grateful for our dedicated caregivers for their consistent commitment to exceptional patient-centered care. Their relentless pursuit of quality is the cornerstone of our mission to not only meet, but exceed, the highest standards for healthier communities and the well-being of every individual we serve.”
The CMS Star Ratings summarize hospital performance across five domains: Mortality, Safety of Care, Readmission, Patient Experience, and Timely and Effective Care. The system rates facilities from one to five stars based on these measures. In addition to star ratings improvement this year—where no CommonSpirit hospital received a one-star rating—several saw their scores improve by two stars. Furthermore, data show that seventy-one percent of eligible CommonSpirit hospitals surpassed national averages in preventing five key types of acquired infections.
Dr. Phillip Chang, SVP and chief medical & quality officer at CommonSpirit said: “These impressive CMS Star Ratings reflect CommonSpirit Health’s unwavering dedication to providing high-quality, safe, and compassionate care to every patient we serve. While we are pleased with these results and our consistent upward trajectory, we know there is always room for improvement, and we are actively working to further enhance our patient outcomes and experiences.” The organization also highlighted recent accolades such as strong Leapfrog Safety Grades in Spring 2026; receipt of the John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety Award; recognition from U.S News & World Report’s Best Hospitals list; finalist status for an American Hospital Association prize; as well as innovation awards related to telemedicine.
Chi Memorial Hospital Georgia formed part of this system alongside three hospitals and sixty-five care sites aiming to enhance lives through superior care according to the official website. Janelle Reilly served as president during this period.
