The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has announced the start of construction on the I-285/I-20 West Interchange project. This initiative, part of the Major Mobility Investment Program (MMIP), is aimed at improving one of the nation’s most congested freight bottlenecks.
Donald Stull, Georgia DOT project manager, expressed enthusiasm for the project’s commencement. “We’re excited to officially begin heavy construction on the I-285/I-20 West Interchange project,” he said. He also acknowledged potential inconveniences during construction but emphasized long-term benefits for local and regional travel.
The project will involve reconstructing and widening ramps at the interchange and adding new lanes along I-20 west and I-285 north. Key design elements include a complete overhaul of infrastructure such as bridges and pavement to enhance durability. The reconfiguration aims to improve safety by shifting exits from left to right lanes, reducing vehicle weaving, especially for freight traffic.
Georgia DOT plans to keep clear communication with the public throughout construction, urging motorists to stay alert in work zones. For more information or updates on this project, individuals can visit https://0013918-gdot.hub.arcgis.com/ or contact the project team via email or hotline.
