Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has announced that contractors will conduct controlled blasting at the I-285/I-20 west interchange. This operation, set to begin on Monday, July 21, will involve traffic pacing along I-285 southbound between 10:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. The activity is expected to continue on weekdays through the end of summer 2025.

The blasting is part of preparations for future construction activities within the interchange’s interior, specifically on the I-285 southbound to I-20 eastbound ramp. Traffic pacing may occur at various locations for up to approximately 20 minutes, starting at Bolton Road.

Motorists should anticipate brief delays and are advised to use navigation apps for alternate routes. Law enforcement will assist with traffic control during these periods. Residents nearby might experience increased noise levels due to construction.

For further details about the project, individuals can contact Georgia DOT via email at westinterchange@dot.ga.gov or call the project hotline at 770-343-0770.

The exact timing of operations may change due to weather conditions, and there could be additional lane and ramp closures in the work zone. Motorists are urged to expect delays, exercise caution, reduce speed in work zones, stay alert, and watch for workers. Real-time updates on work status and traffic conditions are available by calling 511 or visiting 511ga.org.

Georgia DOT oversees planning, constructing, and maintaining state and federal highways in Georgia while also supporting local governments with road maintenance. The department emphasizes innovation, safety, sustainability, and mobility in its transportation system.
