Atlanta Braves legend Dale Murphy visited Calhoun High School on May 13 to present scholarships to graduating seniors Daniela Sanchez and Kirk Wallin through the Dale Murphy Foundation Scholarship program. The event gathered students, staff, administrators, Board of Education members, and community guests in recognition of two student-athletes for their achievements as well as their character and leadership.

The scholarship presentation highlighted the importance of service and positive influence among young people. Superintendent Dr. Michele Taylor welcomed attendees and acknowledged Hayden Brooks, a 1997 Calhoun High School graduate and member of the Dale Murphy Foundation Board of Directors, for his role in bringing the opportunity to Calhoun High School.

Dr. Michele Taylor spoke about Murphy’s career achievements as an 18-season Major League Baseball player with accolades including seven-time All-Star status, five Gold Glove awards, four Silver Slugger awards, and two consecutive National League MVP titles with the Atlanta Braves. “While he is a legend in baseball, he considers faith, family, and service his greatest accomplishments,” said Dr. Taylor during the welcome. “He believes the truest legacy is lifting others up.”

Murphy honored Sanchez and Wallin for demonstrating values such as leadership and compassion within the Calhoun community. The event also recognized Kendra Arnold, a counselor at Calhoun High School who coordinated the scholarship presentation.

Members of both tennis and baseball teams attended ahead of major postseason competitions this week. Murphy shared encouragement with student-athletes as they prepared for upcoming state finals matches.

Calhoun City School District serves approximately 4,200 students across five schools on three campuses while offering comprehensive education from early childhood through high school according to the official website. The district emphasizes academic achievement alongside arts and athletics programs that support cultural development within its community partnerships.
