Delta Air Lines celebrated the launch of its newest European routes with special events and commemorative activities for travelers, according to a May 22 announcement. The airline introduced new services from Boston, Seattle, and New York to destinations including Madrid, Nice, Rome, Barcelona, Sardinia, and Porto. A new route to Malta is set to begin in June.
The expanded network gives customers more options for travel between the United States and Europe during the busy summer season. Delta teams created destination-inspired experiences at departure gates across several cities. Travelers received keepsakes such as custom towels themed around their destinations and were invited to write postcards that would be mailed from their arrival city with authentic local postmarks.
In Boston, passengers flying to Madrid enjoyed Spanish-themed festivities before boarding, including soccer elements and traditional refreshments. They also received hand fans and luggage tags marking the occasion. In Seattle, travelers heading to Rome and Barcelona experienced gate activities featuring local treats like Bell’s Cookies along with pop-up Sky Club events. At New York-JFK airport, customers departing for Sardinia were greeted by regional decorations and music as well as a personal welcome from Delta Flight Attendant Luca—a native of Sardinia—while those traveling to Porto enjoyed Portuguese-inspired decor.
Celebrations continued upon arrival in Europe. In Olbia (Sardinia), a water cannon salute marked the first nonstop connection between Sardinia and the U.S., attended by airport leaders, tourism officials, partners, and Delta representatives including Roberto Ioriatti, Senior Vice President of Revenue Management and International Pricing. Local media described the event as historic for the island.
Additional inaugural festivities took place in Porto with ribbon cuttings attended by community leaders; similar celebrations occurred in Nice, Rome, Barcelona, and Madrid as part of Delta’s expansion across Europe.
The airline will soon add Malta service on June 7 from New York-JFK. Passengers on this flight can expect further commemorative touches celebrating this addition to Delta’s Mediterranean offerings.
