The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is set to continue work on the I-16/I-75 Interchange Improvement Project in Macon-Bibb County from April 25 to April 27, 2025. The project will involve overnight detours on Spring Street near the I-16 eastbound exit.

Contractors, working under GDOT, will implement a detour route each night from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. to ensure safety as demolition work on the Spring Street overpass bridge takes place. “Flaggers will guide drivers through the detour,” according to GDOT officials. Southbound Spring Street traffic approaching I-16 will be rerouted to Emery Highway, Coliseum Drive, and Riverside Drive, while northbound traffic will be directed to Riverside Drive, Coliseum Drive, and Emery Highway.

Ongoing closures include Spring Street’s far right lane and the right-hand on-ramp to I-16 westbound, which have been closed for several months as part of the project. The Spring Street on-ramp to I-16 westbound has been moved to the far left lane.

Several construction activities are scheduled for the weekend, including work on bridge substructures and superstructures for I-16, as well as construction of new entrance ramps and retaining walls. Additionally, installation of bridge lighting and construction of sound and visual walls along I-75 will continue.

The I-16/I-75 Interchange Improvement Project is a $500 million undertaking aimed at enhancing safety and mobility in the area. It involves widening and reconstructing the I-16, I-75, and their interchange as part of a phased construction plan expected to last until 2030. Upon completion, the project will offer improved travel conditions for local commuters, regional travelers, and commercial freight.

GDOT advises drivers to expect potential delays, exercise caution, and reduce speed when traveling through work zones. For up-to-date information on work status and traffic conditions, motorists can call 511, visit 511ga.org, or use the Georgia 511 app.

“Georgia Department of Transportation plans, constructs and maintains Georgia’s state and federal highways. We’re involved in bridge, waterway, public transit, rail, general aviation, bike and pedestrian programs. And we help local governments maintain their roads,” stated GDOT.
