Douglas County announced on May 8 that it will host Watch the Cup Douglas, a community watch party for the FIFA World Cup 2026. The event is open to both residents and visitors from across the region.
The announcement highlights the significance of bringing people together through soccer, which is described as “the world’s biggest sporting event, bringing people together across cultures and countries through a shared love of soccer.” Organizers say this local gathering aims to share in that global energy while also showcasing what Douglas County has to offer.
“Douglas County is excited to host Watch the Cup Douglas, a community watch party open to both our residents and visitors from across the region. It’s a chance to bring that global energy right here at home while also welcoming others to experience everything our county has to offer,” according to officials.
Recent data show that enrollment at Douglas County schools dropped by 0.3% in the 2022-23 school year compared to the previous year, with a total enrollment of 25,737 students during that period, according to the Georgia Department of Education. Black students made up 56% of Douglas County’s student body in 2022-23, Hispanic students represented 20%, white students accounted for 16%, and multiracial students were at 6%, according to the Georgia Department of Education.
Community leaders expect events like Watch the Cup Douglas may foster greater unity and engagement among residents. The county encourages participation from all backgrounds as part of its efforts toward inclusivity.
