The Cobb County Sheriff’s Office has reported the arrest of a driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of a man in Smyrna.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Jafet Mendez was arrested on charges of first-degree homicide by vehicle and felony hit-and-run after allegedly striking a pedestrian. The victim was found deceased on the curb near South Cobb Drive, just north of Concord Road. Officers responded to the scene around 10:30 p.m. following a report from a passerby, determined that the victim had been hit by a fleeing vehicle, and used footage from the Real Time Crime Center to identify and locate the driver within hours. The identity of the victim has not been released, and the investigation remains ongoing.
The Hammers Law Firm reports that in 2022, Cobb County recorded 25,716 motor vehicle crashes, resulting in 10,603 injuries and 77 fatalities. These incidents accounted for 4% of all traffic fatalities in Georgia that year. This data underscores the challenges of road safety in urban areas like Cobb County, where high traffic volumes contribute to such outcomes.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety indicates that in 2023 there were 7,314 pedestrian deaths across the United States, representing 18% of all crash fatalities. Pedestrian fatalities have increased by 78% from earlier levels, reflecting a broader trend in traffic safety nationwide.
The Cobb County Sheriff’s Office was established in 1833 with Tandy Martin as its first sheriff. It provides law enforcement, detention operations, and related services to over 760,000 residents of Cobb County. Led by Sheriff Craig Owens since his election as the first African-American sheriff in 2020, it includes divisions for uniform operations, investigations, training, and support services.
