Wesleigh Gaddy, a 35-year-old from Hogansville, Georgia, appeared in federal court on charges of theft from a program receiving federal funds. U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg stated, “Gaddy allegedly stole more than half a million taxpayer dollars by exploiting the personal information of dozens of former Troup County employees.” He emphasized the commitment to prosecuting those who misuse public service positions for personal gain.
FBI Atlanta Special Agent in Charge Paul Brown commented on the betrayal involved in misappropriating public funds: “The FBI is committed to holding those accountable who abuse this trust and their position for their own gain.” Demetrius Hardeman, IRS Criminal Investigation Special Agent in Charge at the Atlanta Field Office, noted that Gaddy used her role as a public servant to steal identities and access taxpayer money.
In April 2025, a discrepancy was reported by a Troup County Sheriff’s Office deputy regarding his paycheck. An investigation revealed that between March 2023 and May 2025, over $500,000 was withdrawn from county funds while Gaddy was serving as Troup County’s payroll specialist. The complaint alleges these funds were funneled into three bank accounts controlled by Gaddy.
U.S. Attorney Hertzberg highlighted that charges are only allegations at this stage and that it is the government’s responsibility to prove guilt beyond reasonable doubt during trial proceedings.
The case is being investigated by several agencies including the FBI, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and IRS Criminal Investigation. The Coweta Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office referred it for federal investigation. Assistant United States Attorneys Bethany L. Rupert and Garrett Bradford are handling prosecution efforts.
