The Georgia Department of Transportation announced on May 8 that contractors will install lane and ramp closures on Interstate 85 in Clayton and Fulton counties this weekend as part of a concrete slab rehabilitation project. The scheduled work is set to take place Friday, May 8, from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. Saturday, affecting northbound ramps between State Route 139/Riverdale Road and State Route 3/Metropolitan Parkway.
This closure aims to repair and extend the life of the roadway’s concrete materials. Motorists are advised to expect delays, exercise caution, and reduce their speed while traveling through the work zone during project hours. Real-time updates are available by calling 511, visiting 511ga.org, or using the Georgia 511 app.
According to GDOT, affected areas include the I-85 northbound exit ramp to Camp Creek Parkway (exit 72), Airport Boulevard exit to I-85, Airport Boulevard to Camp Creek Parkway, I-85 northbound exit ramp to Virginia Avenue (exit 73A/East), and partial closures at Sylvan Road (exit 75). Roadside signage will notify drivers about closures in advance and direct them toward detour routes.
The $7.1 million project is scheduled for completion in early 2026.
Clayton County schools have seen shifts in enrollment recently: total enrollment dropped by about two-and-a-half percent during the most recent school year with a total of more than sixty-one thousand students enrolled; Black students made up sixty-eight percent of those enrolled; Hispanic students accounted for twenty-four percent; multiracial students represented three percent; white students were two percent of the student body—according to the Georgia Department of Education.
The ongoing roadwork may impact families commuting within these communities over weekends until early next year.
