The Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced on May 20 that Willie James Silas, a 34-year-old teacher at Mitchell County Middle School in Baconton, has been arrested and charged with sexual exploitation of children, grooming of a minor for sexual offense, and child molestation.

This case is significant as it highlights ongoing efforts to address internet crimes against children. The investigation began when the New Castle County Police Department in Delaware received information about a child victim. This led to cooperation between agencies across state lines.

According to the GBI, its Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes Unit received a request from the New Castle County Police Department regarding an Internet Crimes Against Children investigation that traced back to Georgia. Silas was apprehended in St. Augustine, Florida on May 5 and booked into the St. Johns County Jail before being extradited to Georgia and placed in the Mitchell County Jail.

Multiple law enforcement agencies assisted with this investigation, including departments from Delaware, Florida, and local authorities in Georgia. The GBI said this operation is part of its broader participation in the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force program created by the U.S. Department of Justice.

The GBI urges anyone with information about other cases of child exploitation to contact its Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes Unit at 404-270-8870 or submit tips via the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children CyberTipline at Cybertipline.org. Anonymous tips can also be submitted online or through their mobile app.
