GBI investigates in-custody death of Coffee County inmate

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced on May 8 that it is investigating the in-custody death of David Allen Lollie, Jr., age 43, from Douglas, Georgia. The investigation began at the request of the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office.

According to initial information released by authorities, Lollie was an inmate at the Coffee County Jail and had been assigned to a work detail at the Coffee County Road Department. Around noon on May 8, he was found unresponsive during his assignment.

Medical personnel provided assistance at the scene before Lollie was transported to a local hospital. He was later pronounced dead.

Officials said that Lollie’s body will be taken to the GBI Crime Lab in Macon for autopsy. The results are expected to provide further details about his cause of death.

The GBI stated that its investigation is active and ongoing. Once completed, case findings will be turned over to the Coffee County District Attorney’s Office for review.
