The Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced on May 7 that it is investigating the in-custody death of Shaqwan Warren, age 33, of Macon, Georgia. The investigation was requested by the Houston County Sheriff’s Office.

According to preliminary information from the GBI, Warren was being released from custody at the Houston County Detention Center on May 5 after being held on traffic charges and a Failure to Appear warrant. The arrest originated with the Centerville Police Department and Bibb County authorities.

At the time of his release, Warren experienced medical issues and was transported to a local hospital. When he arrived at the hospital, he was unresponsive. Medical staff stabilized him and transferred him to another hospital for further treatment.

Warren was pronounced dead at about 2:45 p.m. on May 6 at the second hospital. The GBI said its investigation into his death is active and ongoing.

Once complete, officials said that the case file will be turned over to the Houston County District Attorney’s Office for review.
