The Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced on May 20 that it is investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred in Athens, Clarke County, Georgia. The incident resulted in the death of Joe Baythavong, age 33, of Hoschton. No officers were injured during the event.

The investigation is significant as it follows a request from the Athens-Clarke County Police Department for an independent review of the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Such investigations are standard protocol to ensure transparency and accountability after incidents involving law enforcement use of force.

According to preliminary information provided by authorities, police responded at about 12:43 a.m. on May 12 to a report of gunfire at the 1000 block of Hull Road. Officers encountered a man matching the description given by a caller who reported multiple gunshots had been fired. Officers gave several verbal commands instructing the man to put down his gun; however, he did not comply and instead pointed his weapon at his own head before firing it. One officer then discharged their weapon, striking Baythavong, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The body will be sent to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy and positive identification procedures. The bureau encourages anyone with information related to this case to contact its Regional Investigative Office in Athens or submit anonymous tips online or via mobile app.

Once its investigation is complete, GBI will provide its findings to the Northern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for further review.
