The Georgia Department of Transportation announced on May 1 that contractors will install lane and ramp closures on Interstate 85 in Clayton and Fulton counties this weekend as part of a concrete slab rehabilitation project. The work covers five miles between State Route 139/Riverdale Road and State Route 3/Metropolitan Parkway, aiming to repair and extend the life of the roadway’s concrete materials.

Weather permitting, scheduled northbound ramp closures will begin Friday at 9 p.m. and continue until Saturday at 6 a.m. Affected ramps include the I-85 northbound exit to Camp Creek Parkway (exit 72), Airport Boulevard exit to I-85, Airport Boulevard to Camp Creek Parkway, I-85 northbound exit to Virginia Avenue (exit 73A/East), and partial closures on entrance and exit ramps to Sylvan Road (exit 75). Roadside signage will inform drivers about the closures in advance and provide detour directions.

According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, “This $7.1 M project is scheduled for completion in early 2026.” Motorists are advised to expect delays, exercise caution, and reduce speed while traveling through the work zone during project hours. For real-time updates on work status and traffic conditions, drivers can call 511, visit 511ga.org, or use the Georgia 511 app.

The Georgia Department of Transportation delivers transportation solutions that support economic development and benefit residents across the state. The agency employs about 4,000 staff members with an operating budget over $4.5 billion. It focuses on developing and maintaining Georgia’s roadways while supporting rail, transit, bridge projects, waterway programs, general aviation initiatives, bike paths, pedestrian programs, and works with local governments as well as federal agencies to advance transportation efforts throughout its statewide network under the State Transportation Board structure, according to the official website.
