The Georgia Department of Transportation announced scheduled lane closures on Interstate 85 northbound in Fulton and DeKalb counties as part of an ongoing resurfacing project, beginning at 9 p.m. on Sunday, May 10, and continuing until 5 a.m. Monday.
According to the announcement, three right lanes and the right shoulder lane will be closed on I-85 southbound between State Route 13/Buford Highway (exit 86) and the I-85/I-75 interchange (exit 85). Traffic will shift to the right on the I-85 southbound exit ramp to I-75 northbound. On-site message boards and traffic control measures will alert drivers approaching the area.
“Lane closures help ensure safety for workers and drivers in the project area as crews continue milling, inlay and resurfacing to improve the deteriorating roadway,” according to the Georgia Department of Transportation. The department advises motorists to expect delays, exercise caution, and reduce their speed while traveling through the work zone during project hours. Real-time information about work status and traffic conditions is available by calling 511, visiting 511ga.org, or downloading the Georgia 511 app.
The $42 million resurfacing project covers approximately 16 miles from the I-75/I-85 Brookwood Interchange in Fulton County to State Route 140 in Gwinnett County. The goal is to produce a smoother ride for drivers while improving road conditions.
The Georgia Department of Transportation delivers transportation solutions that support economic development and benefit residents across the state; it employs about 4,000 staff members with an operating budget over $4.5 billion; focuses on developing and maintaining Georgia’s roadways while supporting rail, transit and other transportation programs; operates under the State Transportation Board; serves the entire state through its transportation network; and works with local governments and federal agencies to advance transportation efforts, according to the official website.
