Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) crews in Northwest Georgia have treated over 5,600 miles of roads ahead of an expected winter storm. According to GDOT, the road treatment began Friday at 7 p.m., and within 24 hours all state routes across the 17 counties in Northwest Georgia were covered with brine.
As of January 24, 2026, GDOT reported that a total of 5,673 miles had been treated. The operation used approximately 263,935 gallons of brine and 31 tons of salt.
GDOT has issued a reminder for the public to avoid driving during the weather event and afterward until roads are confirmed safe. Updates on road conditions will be provided through the GDOT NWGA Facebook page and X account.
Motorists are advised to expect delays, use caution, and reduce speed when traveling through work zones. Real-time updates on traffic conditions can be accessed by calling 511, visiting https://511ga.org/, or using the Georgia 511 app. Maintenance teams continue essential work while following health guidelines related to coronavirus protection measures.
“Please stay off the roads during with weather event and afterward until the roads are safe for travel,” GDOT stated.
