Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr said that protecting children from online predators on platforms like Roblox is his top priority and that companies putting kids at risk will be held accountable.

Carr has launched an investigation into Roblox to determine whether the popular gaming and chat platform is violating Georgia’s consumer protection laws and putting children at risk. Roblox, which is used by millions of kids and teens, is now under scrutiny as Carr’s office examines whether the company has failed to adequately protect young users from harm, according to a press release by Carr.

The investigation follows multiple troubling incidents linked to the platform. In one case, two girls who went missing from their Florida home were later recovered after communicating with a 19-year-old man on Roblox, who now faces kidnapping and other charges. In another instance, an adult posing as a child allegedly used the platform’s chat feature to manipulate a 12-year-old boy into sending explicit photos, raising further concerns about online safety and moderation, according to a press release by Carr.

Under Georgia’s Fair Business Practices Act, Carr has issued a Civil Investigative Demand seeking documents related to abuse reports, child safety measures, parental controls, age verification procedures, moderation practices, and marketing materials targeting children. The move is part of Carr’s broader effort to strengthen online protections for minors, which includes prosecuting online predators, supporting federal safety legislation, defending Georgia’s social media law, and urging platforms like TikTok and Snapchat to improve parental oversight tools, according to a press release by Carr.

“Predators are using online platforms like Roblox to go after our children, and we’re fighting back… As a father and Attorney General, keeping kids safe will always be my top priority, and any company that exposes them to harm will be held accountable,” Carr said.

Chris Carr was appointed as Georgia’s attorney general by then-Governor Nathan Deal in 2016 and was re-elected in November 2022. Since taking office he has focused on addressing issues such as human trafficking, gang activity, and opioid misuse. This includes establishing the state’s first Human Trafficking Prosecution Unit and Gang Prosecution Unit. Carr served as the Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Economic Development under Governor Deal from November 2013 to November 2016 according to Georgia.gov.
