Last week, the “Dignity and Pay Act,” also known as Senate Bill 55, was signed into law by Governor Brian P. Kemp. The bill, sponsored by Senator Billy Hickman, aims to prevent companies from paying employees with disabilities a subminimum wage. It provides a timeline for companies currently offering less than minimum wage to phase out this practice.
Senator Hickman expressed his support for the new legislation: “With the signing of the Dignity and Pay Act, Georgia takes a meaningful step forward in recognizing the value and contributions of all workers,” he stated. He thanked Governor Kemp for enacting the legislation and acknowledged his colleagues’ support. Hickman emphasized that paying employees with disabilities less than minimum wage is an outdated practice that should not continue in Georgia.
The new law ensures fair compensation for all Georgians regardless of their abilities. Senator Hickman believes this change will positively impact individuals, families, and the workforce in Georgia.
As per the new regulation, after July 1, 2027, no Community Rehabilitation Program employer in Georgia will be allowed to pay disabled employees a subminimum wage.
