The Georgia Department of Transportation announced on May 8 that construction activities will continue next week on the I-16/I-75 Interchange Improvement Project in Macon-Bibb County. The scheduled work, weather and site conditions permitting, is set from Friday, May 1 through Friday, May 8.
The ongoing project is important because it aims to improve safety and mobility for local commuters, businesses, regional travelers, and commercial freight moving through Macon-Bibb. The $620 million initiative involves widening and reconstructing sections of I-16 and I-75 as well as their interchange. According to the department’s announcement, the work is being delivered in seven phases expected to continue through 2030.
For the week ahead, nightly right lane closures are planned on Spring Street and both directions of I-16 between mile markers one and two from Monday night until Friday morning. Construction activities include pole and line relocations along Riverside Road; continued installation of erosion control devices; bridge superstructure construction at various ramps; demolition work; new retaining walls; drainage improvements; sidewalk repairs with ADA-compliant ramps; new street lighting along I-75; sound barrier installations; and evaluation for remaining tasks near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard exit.
Motorists are advised that dates may change due to weather or other factors. Drivers should expect delays, exercise caution, reduce speed in work zones, and check real-time information before traveling by calling 511 or visiting 511ga.org.
The Georgia Department of Transportation delivers transportation solutions that support economic development and benefit residents across the state. It employs about 4,000 staff members with an operating budget over $4.5 billion while focusing on developing roadways as well as supporting rail, transit programs and working with local governments across Georgia according to the official website.
As this megaproject continues into its future phases through 2030, upgrades such as new collector-distributor lanes, additional interstate lanes, improved ramps and bridges are expected to deliver safer travel throughout central Georgia.
