The Georgia Department of Transportation announced on May 8 that contractors will install weekend lane closures on Interstate 85 southbound as part of a resurfacing project spanning Fulton, DeKalb, and Gwinnett counties. The $42 million project covers approximately 16 miles from the I-75/I-85 Brookwood Interchange in Fulton County to State Route 140 in Gwinnett County.
The scheduled closures will take place from 9 p.m. on Sunday, May 10, until 5 a.m. on Monday. Three right lanes and the right shoulder lane will be closed between SR 13/Buford Highway (exit 86) and the I-85/I-75 interchange (exit 85). Traffic will also shift to the right on the I-85 southbound exit ramp to I-75 northbound during this period.
On-site message boards and traffic control measures are planned to alert drivers approaching the area. The department said these lane closures are necessary for safety as crews continue milling, inlay, and resurfacing work to improve deteriorating roadway conditions. Motorists are advised to expect delays, exercise caution, and reduce speed while traveling through the work zone during construction hours.
Drivers can get real-time information about work status and traffic conditions by calling 511, visiting 511ga.org, or downloading the Georgia 511 app. The Georgia Department of Transportation delivers transportation solutions that support economic development and benefit residents across the state; it employs about 4,000 staff members with an operating budget over $4.5 billion; focuses on developing roadways while supporting rail, transit and other programs; operates under the State Transportation Board; serves statewide through its network; and works with local governments and federal agencies—all according to the official website.
