The Georgia Department of Transportation announced on May 22 that multiple lane and ramp closures will take place from May 26 through May 30 as part of the ongoing 16@95 Improvement Projects in Chatham County. The work is scheduled to widen Interstate 16 and reconstruct the I-16/I-95 Interchange, with both daytime and nighttime closures planned along several stretches of I-16, I-95, and I-516.
These closures are necessary for widening activities on I-16, bridge work on I-95, and additional bridge work at the I-16/I-516 Interchange. The department said motorists should expect intermittent right-and left-lane closures during both day and night hours. Detours will be coordinated so that no more than one ramp in the interchange is closed at a time. For real-time updates, drivers are encouraged to visit Georgia NaviGAtor at www.511ga.org.
In addition to standard lane restrictions, specific detours will be in effect each night between May 26 and May 30 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., impacting ramps connecting eastbound or westbound traffic between interstates. Detailed detour routes have been provided for each closure period to guide motorists around affected areas.
No roadwork or traffic restrictions will occur during Memorial Day holiday travel times from noon on Friday, May 22 until Monday evening at 10:00 p.m., according to the department’s advisory. The department also cautioned that schedules may change due to weather conditions and urged travelers to expect delays, exercise caution near construction zones, reduce speed, stay alert for workers, and check current conditions before traveling.
The Georgia Department of Transportation delivers transportation solutions that support economic development across the state; it employs about 4,000 staff members with an operating budget over $4.5 billion; focuses on developing roadways while supporting rail, transit and other programs; operates under the State Transportation Board; serves residents statewide through its network; and works with local governments as well as federal agencies to advance transportation efforts—according to the official website.
The broader goal of these projects is aimed at improving safety and mobility along key corridors in Chatham County while minimizing disruptions by providing advance notice about upcoming changes.
