The Georgia Department of Transportation announced on May 15 that there will be temporary interstate lane closures related to the I-285/I-20 East Interchange project. These closures, which are weather permitting, will affect various locations from Friday, May 15 through Friday, May 22.

The advisory is important for motorists as it outlines potential delays and changes in traffic patterns due to ongoing construction work. The project aims to reconstruct the system-to-system ramps at the interchange and add collector-distributor and auxiliary lanes along I-20 east of the interchange and I-285 north of the interchange.

Daytime closures are scheduled from Friday, May 15 through Thursday, May 21 between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., with additional restrictions on Friday, May 22 from 9 a.m. to noon. Locations affected include single right or left-lane and shoulder closures on I-20 Eastbound between Wesley Chapel Road (mile marker 69.5) and Panola Road (mile marker 71.3), as well as other segments extending from Columbia Drive to Fairington Road. Flagging operations will also take place at Hillandale Drive at DeKalb Medical Parkway and Chupp Way at Fairington Road during these times.

Overnight work is planned nightly from Friday, May 15 through Thursday, May 21 with single to double lane closures on both eastbound and westbound directions of I-20 as well as northbound and southbound lanes on I-285 in proximity to the interchange area. There will also be a traffic shift on I-20 Westbound at Columbia Road each night from Sunday, May 17 through Thursday, May 21 between the hours of 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.

The Georgia Department of Transportation restricts further lane closures during Memorial Day holiday travel periods in an effort to minimize impact for drivers.

The department delivers transportation solutions that support economic development across Georgia while maintaining roadways statewide; it employs about 4,000 staff members with an operating budget over $4.5 billion; works under the State Transportation Board; collaborates with local governments and federal agencies; supports rail, transit programs; serves all residents via its network according to the official website.

Motorists are encouraged by officials to remain alert in construction zones during this period.
