The Georgia Department of Transportation announced on May 22 that temporary interstate lane closures will take place as part of the I-285/I-20 East Interchange project. The closures are scheduled from Friday, May 22 through Friday, May 29 and are dependent on weather conditions.

The planned work is part of a larger effort to reconstruct the system-to-system ramps at the interchange and add new collector-distributor and auxiliary lanes along I-20 east of the interchange and I-285 north of it. These changes aim to improve traffic flow and safety in a key transportation corridor.

During Memorial Day weekend, Georgia DOT will restrict additional lane closures to minimize travel disruptions. Daytime single-lane or shoulder closures will occur on various segments of I-20 eastbound between Columbia Drive, Wesley Chapel Road, Panola Road, and Fairington Road from Wednesday, May 27 through Friday, May 29 between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Flagging operations are also scheduled at Hillandale Drive at DeKalb Medical Parkway and Chupp Way at Fairington Road during daytime hours.

Overnight work from Tuesday, May 26 through Friday, May 29 (10 p.m. to 5 a.m.) includes single or double lane closures affecting both directions on I-20 between Columbia Drive and Fairington Road overpass as well as connecting lanes near the interchange. Similar overnight restrictions will be in effect for northbound and southbound lanes on I-285 in areas near Glenwood Road, Columbia Drive, and the interchange itself.

The Georgia Department of Transportation delivers transportation solutions that support economic development across Georgia while serving residents statewide through its network. The department employs about 4,000 staff members with an operating budget exceeding $4.5 billion; it focuses not only on roadways but also supports rail transit programs while working with local governments and federal agencies under oversight by the State Transportation Board, according to the official website.

Residents are encouraged to remain alert for construction signs or flaggers throughout this period as crews continue progress on these infrastructure improvements.
