Georgia Department of Transportation announces overnight paving on State Route 85 in Fayette County

The Georgia Department of Transportation announced on May 22 that overnight milling and paving work will take place on State Route 85 at State Route 92 northbound and southbound in Fayette County, beginning May 26 and continuing through the fall of 2026. The construction is scheduled nightly from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

This project may cause delays for motorists traveling through the area. Drivers are advised to exercise caution, reduce their speed, and stay alert while passing through work zones. The department encourages residents to check real-time updates before traveling by calling 511, visiting the website at 511ga.org, or using the Georgia 511 app.

According to the announcement, “The Georgia Department of Transportation plans, constructs and maintains Georgia’s state and federal highways. We’re involved in bridge, waterway, public transit, rail, general aviation, bike and pedestrian programs. And we help local governments maintain their roads.” The department also said it is committed to “delivering a transportation system focused on innovation, safety, sustainability and mobility.” It added that its vision is “to boost Georgia’s competitiveness through leadership in transportation.”

The agency delivers transportation solutions that support economic development throughout Georgia and benefits residents across the state according to the official website. With approximately 4,000 employees and an operating budget exceeding $4.5 billion according to the official website, it focuses on developing roadways as well as supporting railways, transit services and other transportation programs statewide.
