The Georgia Department of Transportation announced on June 1 that State Route 36 will be closed southwest of Jackson for bridge construction and culvert replacement beginning June 1, 2026, with work expected to continue until fall of 2026.

The project involves removing the existing bottomless culvert at Norris Creek, located 3.2 miles southwest of Jackson, and replacing it with a box culvert. Construction will also affect the area at Big Sandy Creek, situated 3.8 miles southwest of Jackson. The department said a detour route will be established during the closure period.

Westbound traffic on State Route 36 will use State Route 16 to Interstate 75 southbound, then exit at Exit 201. Eastbound traffic will utilize Interstate 75 northbound to Exit 205 (State Route 16) into Jackson. For England Chapel Road, northbound drivers should head east on State Route 16 and turn left onto Shiloh Road before returning via Walt Banks Road; southbound drivers should follow Walt Banks Road and Shiloh Road before rejoining State Route 16.

The department advised that dates may change due to weather or other factors and urged motorists to expect delays, exercise caution, and reduce speed while traveling through work zones. Real-time information on work status and traffic conditions is available by calling 511, visiting the Georgia Department of Transportation’s website at www.511ga.org, or using the Georgia 511 app.
