The Georgia Department of Transportation announced on May 7 that contractors will close lanes and ramps along Interstate 85 in Clayton and Fulton counties this weekend as part of a concrete slab rehabilitation project. The work covers a five-mile stretch between State Route 139/Riverdale Road and State Route 3/Metropolitan Parkway.

These closures are part of ongoing efforts to repair and extend the life of the roadway’s concrete surface. Weather permitting, northbound ramp closures are scheduled for Friday, May 1, from 9 p.m. until Saturday at 6 a.m. Affected areas include the I-85 northbound exit ramp to Camp Creek Parkway (exit 72), Airport Boulevard exits to both I-85 and Camp Creek Parkway, the I-85 northbound exit ramp to Virginia Avenue (exit 73A/East), and partial closures at Sylvan Road (exit 75). Roadside signs will alert drivers in advance and provide detour information.

The department advises motorists to expect delays, use caution, and reduce speed while traveling through these work zones during construction hours. Real-time updates about traffic conditions can be accessed by calling 511, visiting www.511ga.org, or using the Georgia 511 app.

This $7.1 million project is expected to be completed in early 2026. The Georgia Department of Transportation delivers transportation solutions that support economic development and benefit residents across the state, according to the official website. The agency employs about 4,000 staff members with an operating budget over $4.5 billion while focusing on developing roadways as well as supporting rail, transit programs, working with local governments and federal agencies under oversight from the State Transportation Board.

Looking ahead, officials say they remain committed to providing safe roads throughout Georgia by maintaining existing infrastructure while supporting innovation in transportation.
