The Georgia Department of Transportation announced on May 9 that essential road work will continue throughout Southeast Georgia, with construction and maintenance projects scheduled from Saturday, May 9 through Friday, May 15. All work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are advised to reduce speed in work zones, pay attention, and watch for workers.
Traffic interruptions are detailed by interstate, category, and county. On Interstate 95, lane closures and bridge rehabilitation are planned at various locations including Chatham/Effingham Counties (Knoxboro Creek Bridge to Savannah River Bridge), Camden County (St. Mary’s River Bridge Rehab), Bryan County (bridge rehabilitation between MP 93 – MP 91), McIntosh County (resurfacing between MP 44 – MP 49), and additional resurfacing and bridge work in Camden County at multiple mileposts. Nightly lane closures are scheduled for these projects during the week.
Interstate 16 will see installation of ITS equipment along the shoulder in Candler, Bulloch, and Effingham counties with daily shoulder closures from Monday through Friday during daytime hours. Interstate 516 in Chatham County will have continuous nightly lane closures for bridge maintenance from Louisville Road to Tremont Road.
Additional roadwork includes bridge replacements requiring detours such as Lewis Frasier Road at Peacock Creek in Liberty County and Friendship Church Road over Alligator Creek in Telfair County. Resurfacing operations with daily flagging or lane closures are planned on several state routes including SR 17 in Effingham County, SR 169 in Evans County, SR 129 in Candler County, SR38/US84 in Liberty County, SR27/SR38 intersection in Wayne County, SR19 across Telfair/Wheeler Counties, and others.
Other traffic interruptions include daily or nightly single-lane closures on major routes such as Ogeechee Road/Hwy17 (Chatham), Goshen Road (Effingham), Blue Jay Road (Effingham), US80/SR26/Ogeechee Rd (Chatham), Portal Hwy/CR223 (Candler), Harris Neck Road (McIntosh), Rye Patch Road (Long) and more. Motorists should expect delays due to these ongoing projects.
