The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has announced that road construction and maintenance projects will continue throughout Southeast Georgia from Saturday, August 9 through Friday, August 15. These activities are expected to cause traffic interruptions on several interstates and state routes.

Motorists are advised to reduce speed and exercise caution in work zones, as schedules may change due to weather or other factors. GDOT has provided a detailed list of affected areas by interstate, project category, and county.

On Interstate 95, there will be multiple overnight lane closures for repairs at the St. Marys River Bridge near the Florida state line in Camden County. In Bryan County near Exit 87/US 17, overnight lane closures will occur as preparations are made for a traffic shift scheduled between August 15-18. Chatham County drivers should expect nightly single lane closures for concrete sign footer installation between mileposts 90 and 91, as well as ongoing bridge maintenance with weekend closures.

Further south on I-95 in McIntosh and Glynn counties, nighttime lane closures for roadway maintenance are set to continue through August 2025. Other sections along I-95 in Liberty and Bryan counties will undergo asphalt resurfacing during nightly hours.

Interstate 16 travelers in Chatham County will encounter daily single lane closures under the Chatham Parkway Bridge due to corrective work and an upcoming polymer overlay project running through late August. Candler County’s stretch of I-16 is also scheduled for nightly concrete repairs.

Bridge maintenance is ongoing on Interstate 516 in Chatham County with continuous nighttime lane closures expected until the end of August.

Additional projects include a full closure of Lewis Frasier Road at Peacock Creek in Liberty County for bridge replacement with detours via local roads. Bridge rehabilitation efforts continue at SR 204 over Forest River in Chatham County and SR520/US82 at College Creek in Glynn County with expected completion dates later this year or next.

Resurfacing operations affecting various highways such as SR38/SR119 in Liberty County, US84/SR38 in Wayne County, SR117 in Telfair County, SR122 in Clinch County, and US301/SR73 segments in Bulloch County are planned during both day and night hours over the coming weeks.

Other traffic interruptions include road widening on Burnsed Boulevard (SR25) and Ogeechee Road (US80/SR26) in Chatham County; passing lane construction on SR32 across Bacon and Coffee counties; daily flagging operations along parts of SR25/Glynn County; roundabout-related shoulder closures at Benton Boulevard; widening projects on the Liberty Bypass (SR38); all-way stop intersections related to the US1 bypass project in Toombs County; among others.

The City of Statesboro is closing East Main Street (SR24) from August 11–29 for culvert replacement work with signed detours posted.

According to GDOT: “Georgia Department of Transportation plans, constructs and maintains Georgia’s state and federal highways. We’re involved in bridge, waterway, public transit, rail, general aviation, bike and pedestrian programs. And we help local governments maintain their roads. Georgia DOT and its nearly 4,000 employees are committed to delivering a transportation system focused on innovation, safety, sustainability and mobility. The Department’s vision is to boost Georgia’s competitiveness through leadership in transportation.”
