The Georgia Department of Transportation announced on May 14 that construction and maintenance projects will continue across the metropolitan Atlanta area over the weekend from May 15 to May 18.
The department said this information is important for travelers who want to avoid major delays. To help drivers plan their routes, GDOT has created a webpage dedicated to weekend lane closures throughout metro Atlanta. The public can view all scheduled lane closures at http://www.dot.ga.gov/ds/metrolaneclosures by using search filters for traffic impact level, county, interstate, or state route.
According to the announcement, the weekend lane closure schedule will be posted weekly and accessible from Thursday at 4:00 p.m. until Monday at 10:00 a.m. For real-time travel conditions on Georgia’s interstates and state routes, drivers are encouraged to call the free Georgia 511 service or visit www.511ga.org for updates about traffic conditions, incidents, lane closures, and delays. In metro Atlanta, HERO roadside assistance can also be requested by calling 511.
The department outlined its broader responsibilities in transportation infrastructure across Georgia: “Georgia Department of Transportation plans, constructs and maintains Georgia’s state and federal highways. We’re involved in bridge, waterway, public transit, rail, general aviation, bike and pedestrian programs. And we help local governments maintain their roads. Georgia DOT and its nearly 4,000 employees are committed to delivering a transportation system focused on innovation, safety, sustainability and mobility. The Department’s vision is to boost Georgia’s competitiveness through leadership in transportation.” The agency delivers transportation solutions that support economic development statewide; it employs about 4,000 staff members with an operating budget over $4.5 billion; it focuses on developing roadways while supporting rail and transit programs; it operates under the State Transportation Board; serves all regions of the state through its network; and works with local governments as well as federal agencies—according to the official website.
