The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) along with Gwinnett County has unveiled 16 prospective transportation projects aimed at improving mobility along the I-85 corridor. These projects are focused on the stretch between I-285 and I-985.
The Department, after thorough technical studies and input from various stakeholders and the public, will host events to discuss the proposed projects. These initiatives are expected to enhance safety, improve vehicular movement, facilitate commercial travel, and support Georgia’s economy, as well as the communities along the corridor.
Melodii Peoples from District Seven Communications stated that public participation is encouraged through upcoming events organized by Georgia DOT and Gwinnett County. The goal of these meetings is to provide detailed information, highlight project benefits, and gather public feedback. The meetings are scheduled for April 30 at George Pierce Park in Suwanee, May 5 at Lucky Shoals Park in Norcross, and May 14 at Shorty Howell Park in Duluth. Additional information and an online survey are available at 85Study.com.
The study covers an 18-mile section, mainly in Gwinnett County, with a smaller portion in DeKalb County. Over 300,000 daily users of this corridor are expected to benefit from solutions proposed in the study to improve safety, reduce congestion, and enhance traffic operations.
Potential projects include enhancements to the express lane system (Peach Pass), upgrades to freeway and interchange areas, improvements to existing arterial roads and new local roadway connections, and multimodal improvements for transit users, cyclists, and pedestrians.
The Georgia DOT oversees planning, construction, and maintenance of the state’s highways and plays a significant role in areas including bridge, waterway, public transit, rail, and more. With nearly 4,000 employees, the department strives for innovation, safety, sustainability, and mobility.
