Contractors for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will continue work on the I-16/I-75 Interchange Improvement Project in Macon-Bibb County from May 9 to May 16, 2025. The activities are dependent on weather and site conditions.
Scheduled lane closures and traffic shifts will occur on Monday, May 12, and Tuesday, May 13. Each night from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., law enforcement vehicles will pace traffic to slower speeds on I-16 eastbound between the interchange and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard/Coliseum Drive exit, as well as on I-16 westbound between US 23/Ocmulgee East Boulevard and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard/Coliseum Drive exits.
Long-term closures remain in place, with Spring Street’s far right lane at the I-16 westbound on-ramp closed for several months. The right-hand on-ramp to I-16 westbound is also closed, with a relocation of the Spring Street on-ramp to the far left lane.
Construction activities scheduled for this period include ongoing work across various phases of the project:
In Phases 4 and 5, efforts continue from I-16 westbound/I-75 to Walnut Creek with bridge construction and ramp development.
Phases 2 and 3 focus on I-75 from Hardeman Avenue to I-16 eastbound, where lighting installations and sound wall constructions are underway.
Phase 1 involves evaluations of remaining work items from the I-16/I-75 split to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard exit.
The $500 million megaproject aims to enhance safety and mobility by widening and reconstructing sections of I-16, I-75, and their interchange through seven phases expected to conclude by 2030. Upon completion, it promises improved lanes, ramps, bridges, walls, drainage systems, benefiting local commuters and businesses along with regional travelers.
Motorists should expect delays due to potential changes in dates because of weather or other factors. They are advised to proceed cautiously through work zones and can obtain real-time updates via phone at 511 or online at 511ga.org.
