The Georgia Department of Transportation announced on Mar. 27 that multiple lane and ramp closures will take place along Interstate 16, Interstate 95, and the I-16/I-516 Interchange as part of the ongoing 16@95 Improvement Projects. These closures are scheduled to occur from Sunday, March 29 through Saturday, April 18.
The scheduled work is part of a project to widen I-16 and reconstruct key interchanges to improve traffic flow in the area. The department said these closures are necessary for widening activities on I-16 as well as bridge work on both I-95 and at the I-16/I-516 Interchange.
Daytime intermittent right and left-lane closures will be in effect on sections of I-16 westbound from the I-16/I-516 Interchange (milepost 164) to the I-16/I-95 Interchange (milepost 157), as well as on eastbound lanes during specified hours. Similar daytime restrictions apply to segments of I-516 both westbound and eastbound near their interchange with I-16. Nighttime intermittent lane closures are also planned for these corridors between evening and early morning hours.
Double-lane nighttime closures will affect both northbound and southbound directions of I-95 at the I-16 overpass between mileposts 98 and 101. In addition, a series of detours will be implemented during overnight hours affecting ramps connecting various directions among these highways. The department emphasized that no more than one ramp at either major interchange will be closed at any given time, with detours coordinated to avoid conflicts.
Motorists affected by ramp detours are provided alternate routes via other exits such as West Gwinnett Street, Chatham Parkway, SR 204, US Highway 80, or Dean Forest Road depending on direction of travel. Detailed maps accompany each detour route within official notices distributed by Georgia DOT.
The Georgia Department of Transportation encourages drivers seeking daily updates or real-time alerts about construction-related impacts to visit its NaviGAtor service at www.511ga.org or reach out via email for further questions regarding these projects.
