The Georgia Department of Transportation announced on May 8 that weather permitting, there will be multiple lane and ramp closures on interstates in Chatham County as part of the 16@95 Improvement Projects. These closures are necessary for widening activities on I-16, bridge work on I-95, and bridge work at the I-16/I-516 Interchange.
According to the announcement, daytime intermittent right- and left-lane closures will occur from Sunday, May 10 through Saturday, May 16 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at various locations along I-16 westbound from the I-16/I-516 Interchange (milepost 164) to the I-16/I-95 Interchange (milepost 157), as well as along I-516 eastbound and westbound near the I-16 Interchange. Nighttime intermittent lane closures are scheduled during the same week from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., with double-lane closures on I-95 northbound and southbound at the I-16 overpass between mileposts 98 and 101 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
A continuous double left-lane closure is planned for Friday, May 8 through Sunday, May 10 from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. on I-16 eastbound between the I-16/I-95 Interchange (milepost 157) and Dean Forest Intersection (milepost 160). The department has also provided advance notice of detours affecting ramps connecting I-16, I-95, and I-516 during nighttime hours throughout the week. Detours are scheduled so they do not conflict with one another; no more than one ramp in the I-16/I-516 Interchange will be closed at any time.
Motorists are advised that exact times may change due to weather conditions. There may be intermittent traffic pacing in addition to posted lane and ramp closures within work zones. Drivers should expect delays, exercise caution, reduce speed while traveling through work zones, stay alert, and watch for workers. Real-time information about traffic conditions is available by calling Georgia’s travel information number (511), visiting www.511ga.org or using the Georgia 511 app.
