The Georgia Department of Transportation announced on March 27 that it will restrict construction-related lane closures on interstates and major state routes leading to Augusta from Wednesday, April 1 through Monday, April 13. The move comes as increased traffic is expected for golf events in the Augusta area during this period.
The department said suspending construction-related lane closures aims to reduce congestion and create a smoother travel experience for drivers. Lane closures will be suspended on Interstate 20 throughout District 2, which runs from Covington to Augusta, as well as on Interstate 520. All Georgia DOT projects in Columbia and Richmond Counties will have lane closure restrictions. Major state routes leading into Augusta in Burke, Emanuel, Jefferson, Jenkins, and McDuffie Counties are also affected by these changes.
In addition to restricting lane closures, the Georgia DOT will deploy HERO units and additional CHAMP units to the Augusta area. These free services are dispatched to assist with traffic incidents along interstate highways. Their primary role is to clear roads so that traffic flow can be restored quickly. Operators help stranded drivers with tasks such as changing tires and addressing maintenance issues. HERO units may also support the City of Augusta’s traffic management plan during these events.
Drivers who need assistance can dial 511 to request a HERO or CHAMP unit. The department reminds travelers that while most construction-related lane closures are suspended during this time frame, crews may still be active near highways and some long-term safety-related closures could remain in place. Emergency or incident-related lane closures may occur at any time if needed.
