The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has announced planned lane closures on the I-285/I-20 East Interchange as part of an ongoing project to reconstruct the interchange ramps and add additional lanes. “Weather permitting, the Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) construction partners will temporarily close interstate lanes at the locations below for the I-285/I-20 East Interchange project,” stated a spokesperson.
These closures will affect traffic on the interchange from Friday, May 2, through Friday, May 9, 2025. Daytime closures will occur from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., involving the I-20 Eastbound lanes, with single, right or left-lane shoulder closures between Wesley Chapel Road and Panola Road, and from Columbia Drive to Wesley Chapel Road.
In addition, flagging operations will be active on Snapfinger Road under the I-285 overpass and on Miller Road between Panola Industrial Boulevard and Chatooga Drive from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the same period.
Overnight closures and traffic pacing will be in place from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. for I-20 Eastbound: “Eastbound: Single to double, right- or left-lane and shoulder closure from Wesley Chapel Road (MM 69.5) to Panola Road (MM 71.3).”
Additional closures will occur overnight from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on I-285 Southbound from Glenwood to the Interchange and I-285 Northbound from Columbia to the Interchange, with single to double, right-lane and shoulder closures.
The I-20 Westbound will also see overnight closures from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., including alternating single left- and right-lane and shoulder closures from Panola Road to Wesley Chapel Road.
Traffic pacing operations are scheduled from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. on I-20 Westbound from Wesley Chapel Road to Columbia Drive and on I-20 both Eastbound and Westbound from the I-285 Interchange to Panola Road.
Additionally, the project has necessitated a long-term closure and detour on the Miller Road Bridge over I-20, which will remain closed until approximately September 2025.
Information on traffic impacts is available to ensure travelers remain informed. The GDOT emphasizes the importance of monitoring updates regarding the weather and potential impacts on the schedule.
