The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has announced upcoming lane closures as part of the ongoing I-285/I-20 West Interchange Project. The work involves reconstructing and widening several interstate ramps at the interchange, as well as adding collector-distributor lanes, connecting lanes, and auxiliary lanes along I-20 west and I-285 north of the interchange.
According to Georgia DOT, contractors will temporarily close traffic lanes in specific areas to carry out roadwork activities. These closures are scheduled from Wednesday, September 3 through Saturday, September 6, with most occurring during nighttime hours between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m., depending on location.
On I-285 Northbound between Cascade Road and Bolton Road, there will be single and double right-lane and shoulder closures nightly. On I-285 Southbound from SR 280/South Cobb Drive to the I-20 Interchange, pacing operations affecting all lanes and shoulders will take place during midday hours on September 3 and 4. Additional southbound closures are planned between US 78/Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway and SR 139/MLK Jr. Drive at night.
I-20 Westbound will see single right-lane closures from Anderson Avenue underpass to Riverside Parkway, as well as left-lane closures between Linkwood Road overpass and SR 139/MLK Jr. Drive. Double lane closures are also planned for this stretch during late-night hours.
For eastbound traffic on I-20 from Riverside Parkway to the I-285 Interchange, alternating single lane and shoulder closures are scheduled each night.
Other affected locations include SR 70/Fulton Industrial Boulevard southbound from Wendell Drive to Shirley Drive, and SR 139/MLK Jr. Drive northbound from Old Gordon Road to Adamsville Drive, both with nightly right-lane and shoulder closures.
“Motorists are advised to expect delays, exercise caution, reduce their speed while traveling through work zones, stay alert, and watch for workers,” stated Georgia DOT in its advisory. “Before heading out, get real-time information on work status and traffic conditions. Call 511, visit 511ga.org, or download the Georgia 511 app.”
The department emphasized that any personal information provided by users will only be used by Georgia DOT for its own purposes.
